I hear so many people tell me they are concerned with their salt intake, but don’t realize there are simple steps you can take to reduce it. Also, everyone knows I’m a big fan of “do it yourself” so making my own taco seasoning just makes sense. While it is important to know that depending on what spices you buy, there will still be some sodium, what you wont have is the added MSG. Yuck! This recipe will make several batches.
Taco Seasoning
- 4 Tbsp Chili Powder
- 3 Tbsp plus 1tsp paprika
- 3 Tbsp ground cumin
- 1 Tbsp plus 2 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
Combine all of the spices. Then, to make a 1 pound batch of seasoning meat you will use 2 heaping tablespoons of the seasoning and 1 cup of water.

So easy, I don’t know why more people don’t make their own!
Oh my word! I have ALL of this on hand all the time. Thank you!
I’d like ot try this but I don’t get what the 1 cup of water is for?
You add the seasoning to the water and then stir into your meat, just as any taco seasoning packet.

For about a year, I have been making my own taco seasonings, although I do it every batch, instead of bulk, like this. It is so much better than the store bought stuff.
I use Chili Powder, Paprika and definitely always Cayenne. Cayenne adds so much more body and depth to the sauce than just using Chili. I usually dice an onion and cook it with the meat and also add diced Chilis or Hot Peppers as well, so the onion powder is unecessary. You are right, there is so much salt it processed, prepared food! I even stopped buying the “Mexican Blend” of cheese, because it was so salty! It would overwhelm the meat! Usually just use a colby jack-chedder mix which has a creamy, sharp taste that really compliments the spice.
I never thought to add Cumin. I’ll have to try that.
Thanks for your great recipes. I found this one from the Mexican Stuffed Shells, which I found on Pinterest!

Usually, with taco seasoning purchased at the store, you add the seasoning packet and water then cook it for a period of time. What are the cooking instructions for this taco seasoning blend? Thanks!!
See below the ingredients. You use 2 tablespoons with 1 cup of water, just like the packet.
I do make this one! Never have I added water………..I do add salsa however.
